After a spectacular surge in growth and popularity after Earnhardt’s death, the sport has been walloped by the poor economy in recent years, drawing fewer fans and lower television ratings. But the Daytona 500, the first of 36 races in the Sprint Cup Series that extends till November, is still the race that stock-car drivers most want to win.

New rules on pit road may also affect the speed of pit stops. Nascar is allowing one fewer person over the wall this season, eliminating the catch-can man and transferring some tuning duties to already frazzled crew members

fuel that is 15 percent ethanol must be used bye all drivers

Nascar also altered the restrictor plates this week to reduce speeds that reached over 200 m.p.h. during the Shootout.

Nascar has abandoned the arcane points system used since 1975; drivers will now receive 43 points for first place, 42 for second and so on. The race winner also gets three bonus points, while one point, not five, will be awarded to drivers who lead at least one lap.

Johnson, back in the driver’s seat of the formidable blue No. 48 Chevrolet, begins his pursuit of his sixth straight Sprint Cup championship, which would extend his record. Earnhardt and Richard Petty each won seven championships in Nascar’s top series, so Johnson, a 35-year-old Californian, is venturing into elite territory.

The annual NASCAR preseason media poll came out today and it probably should be no surprise to anyone that Jimmie Johnson is the media's pick to win an unprecedented sixth straight Sprint Cup championship.
