Is ESPN Killing NASCAR
Is ESPN Killing NASCAR
I think the issue is the lack of the true great underdog story. There are 10-12 teams out there and 8 of them win most of the races. The most surprising win this year? Probably Reutimann at Chicago and most wouldn't consider that a surprise win. Where are the days of an Alan Kulwicki, Ricky Rudd, or Ricky Craven taking it to the big dogs? If Travis Kvapil, David Gilliland, or Robby Gordon could find a way to win a race, imagine the buzz that would create, not to mention if one of the so called Go or Go Home drivers won. There are no surprises anymore with the winning, especially considering most of the drivers in the field have won races. I say limit teams to three drivers, scrap that top 35 rule, and work on getting more independent teams to the race track.
Another point, what is the most memorable moment from this Chase? Johnson dominating at Dover? Bowyer getting docked 150 points? Hamlin trying to derail the champ? No, no, and no. The right answer is the fight between J. Burton and J. Gordon at Texas. Look at Around the Horn, PTI, and all of the other Sports shows. Everyone finished their show with NASCAR today, essentially an after thought position. When that fight happened, all of a sudden NASCAR was side by side with football and the Miami Heat. Drivers have to show more emotion, we are sick and tired of the vanilla personalities of Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, David Ragan, AJ Allmendinger, and Ryan Newman. Can someone please differentiate which one of these guys would be more aggressive in a fist fight than the other? No you can't because none of them have ever been in a fist fight. Emotion and hard racing are essential to watching these races. Why not offer a point bonus for leading at halfway, I bet guys would race harder on lap 75 if there was a point bonus at lap 125. The key is to offer more points at more stages of the race, because that is what most of these drivers are doing. Offer points at different points in the race, get better racing throughout the event.
There's a few simple reasons why the ratings are down in Nascar! The STUPID chase is a big part of the problem, when they brought toyota into Nascar didnt help anything except for Nascar's wallet, the COT doesnt look like a car that I see at the dealerships, and most of all it shouldnt cost me a moths salary to take my family to a Nascar race, geesh c'mon already! Why would I spend that much money to go see a fake made for t.v. champion drive a foreign car that doesnt even look like anything I see coming from the car factories? \I still say its poor commentators long and many commercials and the fact a lot of southern folk do not have ESPN so its not available to them.
